On 7 July 1944, Tench-class submarine USS Thornback (SS-418) was launched at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, ME, sponsored by Mrs. Peter K. Fischler.
She was transferred to Turkey on July 1 1971, as TCG Uluçalireis (S 338), and is now a museum ship in Istanbul, Turkey.
