On 18 October 1955, Iowa-class battleship USS Wisconsin (BB-64) ran aground on diamond rock on the eastern tip of Manhattan.

Incorrect date...

I believe the date of the photo is wrong... Maybe the publication date?

According to several news articles of the times, the USS WISCONSIN went aground on Diamond Rock on 22 AUGUST 1955 and was freed the following day.

Hi Tom,
You are referring to the 22 August 1951 grounding, I assume.
This one was in 1955, on her way to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
She had two New York City harbor groundings indeed
