37 years ago today, 0n 19 April 1989 Iowa class Battleship USS Iowa BB-61 's turret two exploded during a gunnery exercise off of Puerto Rico. The explosion occurred in the center gun room and resulted in 47 members of the turrets crew being killed and the gun turret itself was severely damaged.
