Hornet laid down

83 years ago today, on 3 August 1942, Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-12) was laid down at Newport News shipbuilding, Newport News, VA. She was originally named USS Kearsarge but was renamed in honor of the prior USS Hornet (CV-8 ), which was lost in October 1942, becoming the eighth ship to bear the name.
