Growler struck

On 1 August 1980, Grayback-class submarine USS Growler (SSG-577) was struck from the Naval Vessel Register and was scheduled to be used as a torpedo target. However, on 8 August 1988, Congress awarded the hulk to Zachary Fisher, Chairman of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City.

Thornback struck from NVR

51 years ago today, on 1 August 1973, Tench-class submarine USS Thornback (SS-418) was struck from the Naval Vessel Register. She was transferred to Turkey on July 1 1971 as TCG  Uluçalireis (S-338).
